Job Description
Annual Salary Range: $80,151 – $102,193
Brief Description of Duties:
Under general direction, performs work of considerable difficulty in field and office
engineering work related to the safe, sound, orderly, and expeditious movement of
vehicular, bicyclist, and pedestrian traffic flow through the Village and conducts
surveys to determine necessary corrective procedures; Determines need,
appropriate design, and location and ensures conformity of traffic control devices
such as signs, roadway markings and traffic signals and implements their installation;
Coordinates maintenance of traffic signs, markings, and parking lot lighting; Assists
in planning and designing intersection improvements; Confers with Public Safety
Depts., business owners and others on traffic-related challenges and solutions;
Conducts site plan reviews for large residential, industrial and commercial
developments to determine the adequacy of the street system to accommodate
projected traffic volume, need for traffic control devices, adequacy of parking facilities
and related safety aspects; Conducts other studies of traffic conditions related to
individual traffic generators, major land use projects and area studies; Conducts the
study and prepares reports and recommendations regarding installation of control
devices where approval of Board of Trustees is required.
Required Training and Knowledge:
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering required, specializing in traffic or
transportation; Two years’ experience in related field preferred, but will consider
applicants with less, if willing to accept a reduced salary; Considerable knowledge of
the application of civil engineering principles to the problems of traffic control devices,
traffic design for new streets and improvements to existing streets, roadway
geometrics of street networks, and comprehensive transportation planning;
Knowledge of accepted guidelines such as the Manual of the Uniform Traffic Control
Devices (MUTCD) and other technical standards; Considerable knowledge of
conducting surveys, collecting and analyzing data; Must be able to obtain P.E.
certification within the State of Illinois; Valid Driver’s License required; Must possess
good oral and written communication and technical writing skills; Must be able to
establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, contractors,
other agencies, and the public.
